Posted on : Wednesday, 3rd August 2016

Dar es Salaam – The government has urged mobile industry to play a major role in the economic development of Tanzania.

Tanzania’s Minister of Works, Transport and Communication was speaking at the GSMA 360 Africa conference and said 18000 km of fibre-optic has been laid by the government for innovation and technology, and also for innovative solutions and services in the continent and across the world as well.

Prof. Makame Mbarawa further added the mobile telephone market has grown significantly in the country but there are substantial sections still left out of the digital dominion.

Data reveals 69 percent of the 49 million populations live in rural areas and until now operators have been able to provide them with 2G networks as 3G network deployment is limited to urban areas mostly. This has resulted with just 35 percent of the people using mobile internet.

He said mobile broadbands will soon be rolled out in the country and this will provide critical access to the unconnected.

Last week the GSMA signed with nine operators to the Connected Women Commitment Initiative and those include Orange Mali, Smart Burundi, Smart Tanzania, Smart Uganda, Tigo Chad, Tigo Ghana, Tigo Senegal, Tigo Tanzania and Zante.

As of now 15 million women are being benefited from the services.
